Pensions For Veterans (1953)
This documentary, made by the Waterside Workers’ Federation Film Unit, advocates pensions for waterside veterans. It depicts the hardships that many workers have faced and highlights some of the health and safety concerns raised in a 1945 report on the conditions of waterside workers. Other sequences include a trip to Canberra to lobby Federal Parliament about the poor health of waterside veterans. The film uses an orchestral score and contains voice-over narration by Jock Levy, one of the filmmakers. Read more…

WWF Film News No.1 (1956)
While Australian commercial newsreels depicted the Royal visit and the Redex Car Trial, and ran stories such as New Guinea: Fuzzy Wuzzies Produce Timber For The World, the WWFFU made an episode of their own newsreel on the Margins Dispute. It was, it's narration said, "a campaign to put the real facts before the people". The strike ran from 23rd January until the 14th February 1956, and the newsreel was screened from early that year. In the Kombi van, the Film Unit, went out from the Sydney Branch to the suburbs, to Newcastle, Wollongong and Port Kembla, and then went down to the Melbourne Branch. Read more…

Click Goes The Shears (1956)
Click Goes The Shears was the second and last the be made in the Link - "Land of Australia" series. It runs for 3 mins and is shot in colour. The artist were Harry Reade and Clem Millward, and the film was produced with the technique of static colour drawings and celluloid moveable frames. The song is sung by Cedric McLaughlin and the Link Singers. The film is quite simple with very little animation. The Sydney University Film Group screened it in 1958 as did the group from within the Melbourne Film Society. Read more…

Dublin Dockers Dispute
Forced redundancies, pay packets slashed by 200 Euro's and then locked out. Dublin Dockers enter week 13 of the dispute with employer Marine Terminals Limited (M.T.L.) owned by UK based Peel Ports Group which is 49% owned by Deutsche Bank. The Official Re-naming Of "The Hungry Mile"
The Hungry Mile, the name harbourside workers gave to the docklands area of Darling Harbour East, in Sydney, during the Great Depression, has been formally re-named to ensure its link to history lasts forever. The name became an official part of Sydney in a joint ceremony with Premier Nathan Rees, Lord Mayor Clover Moore, Lands Minister Tony Kelly and The Maritime Union of Australia Secretary Paddy Crumlin. Transport Unions Federation (T.U.F) Protest Rally
Unionist, activists and members of the community rallied together at Central Station in Sydney to voice their opposition to the New South Wales (NSW) Government's relentless push to reduce public services throughout the New South Wales transport network. Speakers from the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTB) and Transport Workers Union (TWU) were proud to announce their ongoing commitment to raise the standards of public services in the transport sector. ITF To The Rescue - Grand Victoria
Filipino crew on board the Singapore flag of convenience bulk carrier Grand Victoria loading coal in the port of Newcastle have won US$170,000 in back pay owing after intervention from the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) Australia. The cash payment of US $100,000 was personally made to 19 crew members, with confirmation that a further $70,000 owing in family allotments has been paid into their home bank accounts. The company also signed an ITF agreement giving the crew a pay rise and better working conditions on board. Read more…

May Day Cuba 2009
MUA officials, rank and file wharfies, seafarers, women, youth and veterans from around Australia were among workers from 58 countries to meet in Cuba for the May Day Celebrations, the 50th Anniversary of the Revolution and 70th anniversary of the organised trade union movement, this month. Sydney Ferries Demonstration
Bass and Flinders have slashed the wages and conditions of their workers. The company has refused to negotiate with the union even after the MUA has recognised the company's right to operate and has agreed to establish terms and conditions suitable for the specific needs of the enterprise. Bass and Flinders have used old WorkChoices laws, rejected by the community at the last election to slash base wages by 25%; they have also cut leave by 20% on base minimum standards. We ask for the support for the workers who are simply asking for their rights at work to be protected. Read more…
