Unreal Estate

In February 2000 people started living in empty South Sydney City Council-owned buildings on Broadway close to the centre of Sydney. Residents cleaned up the places, made them habitable and created a cafe, art gallery and more. On 23rd August 2000, just before the Sydney Olympics, the squatters were discovered. From that point onwards the Council attempted to evict the squatters. The Broadway squats were the first squats in some time to be open about their autonomous occupation.

Hi, I have selected Unreal Estate for use as teaching aid in a Media classroom. Does a subtitle file count as a derived work? Speaking of which, do you have any use for it?

Hey Felix,
I'm not a lawyer but I guess it could strictly be, though I'm pretty sure that the squatspace crew would be quite excited that someone had made subtitles for it. What language are the subtitles in?

Feel free to upload the subtitles to the site as a file in your work space and post here or email it to us, I can add it into the info about the video.

Couldn't find your e-mail address in a hurry, so I made an account and uploaded the file: Unreal Estate Romanian Subtitles.

I realize it is of little interest for someone in the Asia/Pacific area, but the movie happens to touch a sensitive issue for me, as downtown Bucharest has plenty of buildings - gorgeous historical buildings, no less - that lie abandoned, while demand for real estate rages. And then, of course, there is the classroom need that initially led me to find it.
