Full Description
The squatted Student Housing Action Co-operative (SHAC) ran for almost five months at 272-278 Faraday Street Carlton. Providing not just housing for over 50 students in that period, but also a radical social centre and open community space.
SHAC was evicted early on the morning of the 14th of Jan 2009, by over 30 officers from Victoria Police and the Sheriff's Office. Bringing to an end a vibrant and positive project.
While SHAC may have lost the premises at Faraday Street. Overall the campaign can be seen as an enormous success; as a direct action campaign, successful student run housing co-operative, a community/social centre and and a vector for politicising and radicalising a whole lot of people. Imbuing another generation of activists with a healthy disregard for the law.
SHAC is dead, long live SHAC!
