Festival Mata Air

by Alexandra Crosby last modified Apr 30, 2010 06:32 AM
The city of Salatiga, situated in the mountains of Central Java, is recognized by the Indonesian government as a “water catchment” area for the surrounding districts. Despite this, Salatiga is in a perturbing condition. Water levels at natural springs have dramatically reduced, some have dried up all together. Areas necessary for water catchments have become factories or housing estates, with waste products and pollution at alarming levels. Deforestation occurs without consideration of the effects to water and the environment. If we continue to allow this to occur without any action to rectify the situation, in a short time it will be too late.

TUK, as an environmentally concerned community in Salatiga, aims to campaign the issues of water conservation and the environment to the wider community. With this campaign we aim to raise awareness about the importance of these issues for now and for future generations. Last year we began an active campaign that accumulated in Festival Mata Air 2006 at Senjoyo water springs, the main water source for the majority of the population in Salatiga.

As we are all aware, this type of campaign is not effective if it occurs once and is over. This year TUK is continuing its campaign with a second festival: Festival Mata Air 2007. This year we have chosen a different location in the center of the city of Salatiga, namely in the areas of Pancuran and Kalitaman. These districts are very densely populated urban areas that have several water springs and rivers running through the ‘kampungs’. Environmental awareness is a low level.

FESTIVAL MATA AIR 2007
The festival this year will run from the 1st –8th of September 2007, and will be located in Kalitaman, Salatiga. This year’s festival aims to be a medium to express, through art and culture, the importance of protecting our environment and our water. We hope to involve all levels of society and all age groups.

The festival will consist of many different types of activities, entertainment and environmental awareness programs.

Continuous events that will run the duration of the festival include:
- An exhibition of the results of TUK’s workshops
- An exhibition of the results of the Children’s drawing competition
- An exhibition of Memorabilia and old photos of Salatiga
- Interactive Maping of Pancuran & Kalitaman
- Installations and Artwork made from Trash
- Workshop- Rubbish sorting & compost making
- Bazaar and Environmental Information Stands

Scheduled Events

Saturday 1st Sept 2007
ENVIRONMENTAL MURAL COMPETITION
This competition will be carried out at 13 different locations around Salatiga.
