by Anna Helme last modified 2007-09-06 03:59

The Xiph Quicktime Components allow you to play back and create Ogg Theora/Vorbis files with any application that uses Quicktime architecture - such as Quicktime Player, Final Cut Pro and iTunes. XiphQT is easy to install on both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. This new version contains fixes and improvements to help make Xiph codecs more usable than ever.

Xiph QuickTime Components (XiphQT) is a set of QuickTime and Macintosh OS X plug-ins. Their role is to provide support for Xiph media compression and container formats.

If you are an end user: installing XiphQT components is all you need to start using Xiph-formatted media files in a variety of applications - for example, listening to Ogg/Vorbis files in QuickTime Player or iTunes. The programming interfaces used in XiphQT allow the provided functionality to be available transparently to all media handling applications using QuickTime or OS X component mechanisms.

The current version is 0.1.8. It is expected to work with the following system configurations:

  • Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel):
    • version 10.3.9 or 10.4 and later;
    • QuickTime for Mac OS X - version 7 or later;

The latest version of XiphQT for Windows is 0.1.5 and it requires:

  • QuickTime for Windows - version 7 or later.

XiphQT is a work in progress. The project is young and evolving, with new features and functionality planned or being added. You can find more info about the Xiph Quicktime component  here on the Xiph.org website.

Of course, bugs happen. If you found one, please let them know!
