Fishermen Vs. Coal Company

by Migrant Worker Resource Center August 25, 2012

At the end of December 2009, fishermen from Kutawaru and Karang Talun, in Cilacap, Central Java, occupied a coal bulk carrier belonging to the Holchim Company. The ship was headed for the dock to load and unload coal in the PT Holchim Port in the Donan waters. They forced the captain of the ship to change course, back to the Wijayakusuma dock. The fishermen blamed Holcim for ignoring the conditions of the river and coastal fishermen whose incomes were reduced by the big coal businesses. The number of fish has also dropped drastically, and the company is to blame for causing pollution by spilling coal along the river and the coast. Fishermen successfully forced the bulk carrier to turn away without using violence.
