China leads calls for deeper emission cuts

by Emily Braham last modified Apr 30, 2010 07:46 AM
China has called for the US and EU to commit to greater emission cuts and full financial support for developing nations in any climate deal.

Wary of a legally-binding agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol, China is urging the US and EU to commit to greater emission cuts at the Copenhagen climate conference.

The deputy head of the Chinese negotiators at the talks, Su Wei, said the US, EU and Japan must offer more substantial emission reduction targets.

Su Wei said it is crucial the US commits to financial support for developing nations for any effective agreement at Cop15.

He rejected assertions that China should help provide funds for other less developed countries to meet the challanges of climate change.
