Community advocacy group GetUp is running a new campaign against Australian Federal Government plans to censor what we view on the internet. The ‘Save the Net’ campaign is gaining momentum, with over 55,000 Australians having already signed a petition to Communications Minister Senator Conroy voicing their outrage over the Government’s ill-considered ideas.

Following the release of Plumi 0.2.2 last month, EngageMedia’s tech team is pleased to announce the release of a new version of its video-sharing application, Plumi 0.2.3. This new release includes several bug-fixes, and some minor improvements to templates. It also incorporates improvements to the transcoding framework to include transcoding of Flash video files.

After a long childhood obsession with the leatherback turtle, he was deeply disturbed to learn that it was near extinction when he was 12. It was then that he realised that something was very wrong.

More than just a video sharing website, EngageMedia is currently undertaking a range of video distribution projects within the Asia Pacific region. One of our latest projects to take off in Indonesia is aimed at creating four local archives within Indonesia for video makers to be able to store and share their work.

As part of our Skills Building Partnerships (SBPs) program focussed on developing the online video distribution skills of relevant community organisations, EngageMedia recently delivered a training program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for Komas from 21-22 January 2009. Komas is a Popular Communications (PC) centre established in Malaysia in 1993 primarily using video as a tool for social change.

From February 7-8 2009, EngageMedia (with guest speaker Fahmi Reza) ran a workshop for local video makers in Malaysia on how to effectively distribute video online. Nova from our Indonesian office and Andrew from our Melbourne office joined me two days before the workshop to go over our game plan and make the final preparations.

This quirky feminist documentary plays out the drama of two leftist sisters (Antonia and Alexandra) against the big stage of US empire, corporate greed, and media escalation.

Maruli’s videos are about the social and political injustice that occurs almost everywhere in Indonesia. He mostly works with communities who suffer from violence enacted by the State or other authorities. His motivation is to give these communities an outlet to express their feelings and thoughts.

The 2009 issue of State of the World’s Forests from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations discusses the current and future state of forests and forestry at the subregional, regional and global levels. Predictions for the Asia Pacific include a decline in forest area in “low- and middle-income forest-rich countries.”

It’s April already and the year has been flying by. The big news in the EngageMedia office is that we just completed a major project for Critical Commons; a non-profit advocacy coalition that supports the use of media for teaching, learning and creativity, providing resources, information and tools for scholars, students, educators and creators. The project was established out of the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Using Plumi, our talented tech team created a website for Critical Commons which will act as an online tool for viewing, tagging, sharing, annotating and curating media within the guidelines established by a given community.

From 18-19 April 2009, EngageMedia delivered a workshop in Malaysia training participants in effective methods of video distribution. Due to a mix of participants hailing from as far as the south of Thailand, it was decided to host the workshop in Penang in a mixture of English and Bahasa Malaysian.

As part of our Asia Network program, EngageMedia is delivering a number of 'Skills Building Partnerships' to activist and community groups in Asia-Pacific to assist them in distributing their videos. Last month Andrew and Nova spent three days with the folks from Forum Lenteng in Jakarta; a non-profit organisation working to develop social and cultural studies as a vehicle to examine issues of culture in society in Indonesia.
