Rainforest Action Network's Valentine Card

by EM News last modified Feb 15, 2012 11:57 AM
Did you buy chocolates today for someone you love? Take a quick second to scan the ingredients for palm oil and palm kernel oil. These controversial ingredients are no symbol of love. A majority of the world's palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia, where thriving rainforests—home to ancient Indigenous communities, majestic creatures, and flora of every shape and size—are torn down by the palm industry and replaced with monoculture plantations, some of which use slave labor.

Dear Chocolatier,

While I do adore chocolates, I have no love for rainforest-destroying palm oil.

With this Valentine postcard, I want to make sure you are aware that the palm oil that you are using to make some of your Valentine's chocolates could be linked to some very alarming issues.

A majority of the world's palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia, where thriving rainforests are torn down by the palm oil industry and replaced with monoculture plantations, some of which have been discovered to use slave labor.

I know you do not want your Valentine sweets to be soured with controversy.

Please reconsider your use of palm oil. If you feel you must use it, I’m asking you to diligently investigate the origins of the palm oil in your candy. Ask your supplier to tell you where your palm oil comes from and what safeguards are in place to ensure that slave labor, rainforest destruction, Indigenous rights abuses, and species extinction are not a part of your supply chain.

If you need assistance in this process, please contact the Forest Team at Rainforest Action Network by emailing answers@ran.org.

Thank you for investigating this matter immediately.

Sincerely,

Rainforest Action Network
