The explosive device was hidden inside a 10 centimeter book which was addressed to Ulil Abshar Abdalla who was the Coordinator of the Liberal Islamic Network (JIL). Ulil left for studies in the US after working in ISAI, and now he is actively involved with the Democrat Party.

Kanal Informasi reported that the bomb was intended to kill judging from the capacity. Although considered a low explosive device, it was enough to damage a person's face, head and chest. Suspicious of the package, ISAI staffs at 2pm examined the book carefully. Saidiman Ahmad found wires inside the book staffs decided to call the police.

Officers arrived at the compound and brought metal detectors. After waiting for the bomb squad Gegana for too long, a ranking officer decided to examined even further at 4pm, and asked the help of the offices' security guards to hose water into the mock-up book.

As photographers and camera operators aimed their devices, the package exploded. Smoke was everywhere, along with white derbies. People started screaming, the officer was badly injured, his left hand was badly injured, pieces of his flesh flew for meters. The security guards were also thrown off their feet and fell unconcious. The injured were rushed immediately to the Cipto Mangunkusumo State Hospital.

The ISAI offices are still blocked  with police lines for days ahead.

Aside from Kanal Informasi, the Utan Kayu complex housed also Kanalinformasi.com, TempoTV and Yayasan Kajian Islam Utan Kayu. The basement level has a small theater which is usually used as a studio by  TempoTV, and occasionally as a discussion space by Yayasan Kajian Islam Utan Kayu, the umbrella institution of the Liberal Islamic Network (JIL). Next to the ISAI office, there is the famous eatery Kedai Tempo, the offices of Green Radio (89,2 FM), School for Broadcast Media (Sekolah Media Penyiaran), 68H News Radio, Asosiasi Wartawan Radio Republik Indonesia (Alwari), Perkumpulan Masyarakat Jurnalis Lingkungan Indonesia and Perkumpulan Pengembangan Media Nusantara. Located there also is the Kalam Bookshop.

Utan Kayu was a much more lively place in the past, however nowadays, most of the cultural activities have been shifted to the more spacious Teater Salihara in Jl. Salihara, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta.
