EngageMedia now presents the easiest way to add subtitles and translations online, AMARA. The widget is now available with every video on our site.

What is Amara? It is a crowdsourced web-based tool that enables you to create captions for videos that are hosted on sites such as YouTube and Wikimedia Commons. Amara is licensed under a GNU Affero General Public License. With Amara, you can produce subtitles in most languages, and download in a wide range of file formats. The commonly used one is .srt.

Subtitles on EngageMedia’s videos are added using Amara, and we hope that readers and viewers of our website would be encouraged to volunteer their time to add missing subtitles in our videos if they are able to understand the language. Anyone with minimal web skills may add subtitles.

Below is a step-by-step process on how to subtitle videos on EngageMedia’s website:

  1. First, go to https://www.engagemedia.org and log in with your username. If you do not have an account yet, please sign up clicking the Register button on the upper right corner, beside the login button.amara1

  2. Upon logging in on the website, you may choose any video that you believe has missing or incomplete subtitles. Please wait until the website loads fully. You will know that loading has been finished if the video shows a Subtitle Me option on the bottom left, next to an arrow pointing downwards. Click the Subtitle Me button. A dialog box with a header Create subtitles will show up. Click the video page link. You will be directed to a page on Amara.org showing your chosen video. Create a free account on Amara by clicking the Sign Up for Free link on the upper right corner of the page. Fill in the necessary data, then click Create Action. You will also need to confirm your email address. Check your inbox for a message from Amara, and follow instructions. However, if you already have an account, click Log In and sign in using your credentials.amara2

  3. Once you were able to log in successfully, go back to your chosen video to click the Subtitle Me icon. You will be redirected to the necessary link in Amara, as shown below.amara4

  4. Click Add a New Language on the left sidebar. Select the language of the video. If the English version is not yet available, please contact EngageMedia’s site administrator and wait for it to be uploaded. However, in case the English subtitle has already been provided, proceed to add your preferred language.amara3

  5. Follow the instructions below in subtitling the video. The left pane controls have the keyboard controls that you can use in playing, pausing and skipping the video, and inserting a line break in the text pane. The middle/text pane is where you type what you hear from the video. amara5

  6. After choosing your language, click Continue. You will be directed to the Subtitle Editor site as shown in the photo below. Do not forget to type the title in your preferred language by clicking the pencil icon on the upper left part of the page.amara6

  7. Finally, when you are able to translate every sequence from the video, click Sync Timing then Publish. It will be automatically synchronized to the video on the EngageMedia website.amara7
