On Human Rights Day, December 10 2011, 64 music lovers came from as far as Jakarta and West Java to a charity concert in Banda Aceh's Taman Budaya Park. They were detained for being "punks" and "disturbing the peace", and later held in a camp, where they are currently undergoing "re-education".
This video highlights a long solidarity march that was held on December 17 2011 in Jakarta. Protesters chanting slogans such as "Free Aceh punks now!", walked from Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Mess Aceh, to Bundaran Hotel Indonesia.
Several human rights groups have expressed concern after photographs emerged of the young men having their hair completely shaved off and being forced into a communal bath in a lake by Aceh's police. Aceh is Indonesia's most devout Muslim province.
