Jakarta was rocked by the three bomb packages sent to three targets on March 15, 2011. One of them was sent to the Islamic Liberation Network in Utan Kayu, East Jakarta. It exploded while it was being diffused by the police.
Three explosive devices hidden in mailing packages were sent out to three targets on March 15, 2011. The sender of the three packages according to the police was one person, Sulaiman Azhar, with the listed address: Jl. Bahagia Gang Panser No. 29, Ciomas, Bogor, West Java.
The first was sent to Ulil Abshar-Abdall of the Islamic Liberal Network (Jaringan Islam Liberal) in Utan Kayu, East Jakarta at 10am. Ulil is the founder of the network, but he is now a politician with President Yudhoyono’s Democrat Party. The package, in the form of a thick book with explosive devise hidden in it, was passed on to the police but exploded during the attempt to difuse it. The mocked book was titled “Mereka Harus Dibunuh karena Dosa-dosa Mereka terhadap Islam dan Kaum Muslimin" (They have to be murdered for their sins to Islam and Muslims).
The other two were sent to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chief Gories Mere and Pemuda Pancasila youth organization chairman Yapto Soerjosoemarno.
The Islamic Liberal Network has had its run-ins with several hard line Islamic groups. Ulil has long been a target of assault. Yapto Soerjosoemarno on the other hand, is the leader of Pemuda Pancasila (PP), a once popular thug-for-hire organization. PP was often used to attack East Timor activists and facilitated the evictions of the Jakarta slum communities. Yapto is also a well-known Indonesian-Jew.
