The Wamena culture regard highly to swine. The name Wamena itself came from the word Wam - swine, and Ena - tame, Tame swine. In every rites of passage are symbolized by the giving of swine. Swine is also the symbol for peace among the tribes on the central highlands. The wealth of a family is measured by how many swine they have. It's not surprising to have an economic setback for the people of Wamena should there be an epidemic causing swine deaths.
