Neo-beginners and Street: behind the cliché
two exhibitions, one theme
after walking
The exhibits Neo-beginners (from August 31 to 24 september, in Tent.) And
Street: behind the cliché (8 september to 19 november, Witte de With) have
substantially the same theme. They incorporate the concepts of both the street,
the city and public space as a starting point. Nevertheless, they look totally
different and because they simultaneously in the same building could be seen,
it is a good reason for the differences.
In Street: behind the cliché is 28 (!) Artists displayed in very different ways
comment on the overarching theme. The curators Renske Janssen and Nicolaus
Schafausen have freely and widely chosen from works by various artists for a
thematically coherent exhibition down. From many speeches is the link with the
theme not immediately clear. What does Luc Tuymans, for example in this
exhibition? Despite his very beautiful work shows (jackets painted with knots)
I am not clear what this work specifically with this exhibition has to do. The
same applies also to Isa Genzken, the wonderful work again but the direct link
to the exhibition is missing here.
What strikes me is that this diversity of visual examination very many
different aspects are addressed. For example, in the work of Iain Forsyth &
Jane Pollard, Walking After Acconci (Redirected Approaches) in which an old
performance of Vito Acconci is' translated 'to a current situation with updated
imagery, very clear artists how to read and translate the potential
expressiveness of art itself as a problematic issue. In other works is a much more
direct link between the - whether or not individual - identity and publicity, a
very obvious and invoelbare way to the theme to understand. In other works, the
theme from the idiom of minimal formal and visual arts raised where you have
assumed the idiom is to identify the potential expressiveness to undergo.
All this is presented in the traditional fashion with the tentoonstellingsmodel
of the 'white cube': The works are presented side by side, they get individual
space but go (albeit difficult) also relationships with each other and so there
together with the accompanying booklet in which to find information about the
artists and the theme, a whole.
Despite that the whole of the exhibition, the theme of man and the publicity it
comes to top, it would be just as good an exhibition which may be a totally
different area in the composition could be placed. The theme would, for
example, a sample of the various concerns and resources which artists are
currently able to operate.

The contrast with the exhibition Neo-beginners is great. The works displayed
here also represent a wide spectrum of expression, but because they go well
conceived and drafted an interaction with the space and with each other. The
works range from static images to work that occurred as the result of a process
or as a report on events elsewhere. There are also works of literary nature,
such as the presentation of the work of Daniel Robberechts who in his oeuvre
the role of language as personal and public expression exhaustively examine.
Also in the presentation of BAVO, an essay as a plea against the use of
creativity as a political and social instruments, the language as prostheses
prominent erected. This is a very broad spectrum of visual examination showed,
the width ranges from ultimate introspection as with Robberechts to a notion of
globaliteit by the presentation of Lenteng Forum, an Indonesian group that
investigates to the Rotterdam urbaniteit to the notion of art as the
description in political-social purposes such as BAVO. It gives a wide as
possible interpretation of the theme: People and the public.
There are some weak holes in the exhibition, the nature of some of the speeches
could not happen without incidents unite with the whole. The participatory
nature of the workshop LAb [au] and the accompanying presentation is of a
different order than the generally slower operation of the other speeches. The
exhibition is already very diverse in terms of expression, maybe had a little
cautious in this regard can be selected.
The lack of cards and information in the works as a visitor, you get no extra
opportunity to work easier. You'll be left alone with the work. This anonymous
status to a relationship with each other on the basis of equality: the
equivalence of present at this moment and at this place. In this way the
exhibition with their works placed as a catalyst for links to find and create
the impression of a total work of art. The curator Reinaart Vanhoe that this
exhibition has composed himself an artist, the work in a way where they
displayed their best to right and the context within which the exhibition is
the result of the effects of individual contributions. The theme seems rather a
loose continue to search for artists and the exhibition has been designed from
the visual functionality of the works themselves.

The big difference between the exhibits lies in the commitment of artworks in
relation to the themes presented. By Street: behind the cliché are the works of
art by a large margin with regard to the theme searched and then presented as
evidence for the benefit of the theme. The exhibition runs ultimately to the
comprehensive story that is raised by the curators with the artworks as a
result of mix and illustration to this structure. The problem, the content of
the story of the receivers is actually sociological nature of art through which
tried to approach. Here is a suggestion made on the employability of art as
clarifying phenomenon regarding sociological problems (the man and his
environment). A function where some of the artists selected their questions.
The artworks in Street will give them a degree of platheid, becoming static
chapters in a different story. As if the results of artistic research can be
transferred to another domain. It is debatable whether art that in this way
will be deployed to its full expressiveness concern.
When Neo-beginners is the theme used to put down an exhibition where the visual
effect of art is paramount and that the operation must have begun the process
must provide convincing picture. This is beneficial to the potency of art
itself. The exhibit calls on the spectator and asks commitment and willingness
to want to see the links. That more time is needed than an exhibition where the
images despite their layering is uniquely presented to a call attention
demanding. But it is intentional or the value of the artwork and sued to become
part of the Artistic as the creator intended. It feels like a relief to once
again into an area where the first body to the Artistic, unlike a compelling
structure that serves to the story of the liquidator to get it closer with the
artworks as evidence for this story .
