Full Description

Play Fair, an alliance of unions and labour rights organizations throughout the world, has been campaigning for close to a decade to improve the implementation of workers’ rights in the apparel sector. In 2008 Play Fair convinced a number of major sportswear companies to join a pilot project in Indonesia to strengthen three main components of decent work: freedom of association, job security and fair wages.

At the end of 2009 Indonesian unions, supplier factories and sportswear brands including Adidas, Nike and Puma started developing a document which would set out practical ways to ensure that unions had the freedom to operate and organise in factories. They called their initiative the Freedom of Association Protocol.

KASBI, SPN, Garteks, TSK and GSBI unions took a leading role in the negotiations. These unions collectively represent more than half a million workers, of whom 70% are women. The negotiation process was also supported and facilitated by a number of NGOs, including Oxfam and LBH-Jakarta.

After 18 months of negotiations, on Tuesday June 7  2011 in Jakarta, Nike, adidas, Puma, participating unions and several large supply factories agreed to ratify the region's first FOA protocol.

Indonesian unions, Oxfam, CCC, the ITGLWF and other members of Play Fair are now undertaking efforts to strengthen implementation of the protocol and monitor its impacts. They are continuing to campaign other global garment brands who source from Indonesia to sign the FOA Protocol. To find out more visit: http://www.play-fair.org/
