Full Description
Let Me Love Me is a collaboration between Eko Nugroho (Story and Drawing), Hariyanto (Animation), Wedhar Riyadi (Sound) and Tee (Editing)
Like his hero, Malaysian cartoonist Lat, Eko’s works are rooted in the everyday; and while his work appeals to Indonesia’s younger audience, older folk have a hard time accepting his work as “fine art.” His images reflect Indonesia’s politically charged environment and feature humorous but disturbing social satires barbed with strong political statements and an inimitable brand of “Yogya surreal,” with part-man part-machine characters accompanied by funny yet disturbing lines like “Please shoot me from the back.”
“To be honest, I do not deliberately choose to be political or to adopt political messages in my work,” Nugroho explains. “My everyday life here in Indonesia is dominated by issues such as poverty, social injustice, religious fanatics, corruption, and it is difficult to turn away from it.”
