ROUND ONE

From the OK.VIDEO Jakarta International Video Festival 2007. This video was produced during the OK.VIDEO Militia workshop in Malang in collaboration between ruangrupa and the Insomnium community, a community whose members are mostly students or alumni of the Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The community conducts photography projects, workshops, and short-films screenings. 'Round One' is a performance video that tries to criticize the existence of shopping center in the town.

[ENGLISH] The Paris of East Java-Malang's beautiful nature, cool climate, and clean environment makes it the Paris of East Java. As 'The City for Excursion', 'The City of Rest', and 'The City of Education', Malang has a calm atmosphere, friendly people, cheap food, and adequate education facilities. It is an appropriate place to study. There are at least five state universities in Malang, and tens or perhaps hundreds of private universities. It is also 'The Military City', as it houses a place for military training, as well as military quarters around the Rampal field, and during the Japanese occupation, the airfield Sundeng had been built in the area where the government-funded houses stand today. Malang is also 'The City of History', as it holds the mystery around the origins of the ancient great kingdoms such as Singosari, Kediri, Majapahit, Demak, and Mataram. One thing that is very well-known in Malang is its tradition of soccer. AREMA (short for 'Arek Malang' or 'Malang Kids') is its main club, the pride of Malang. Its supporters call themselves Arek Malang Singo Edan (Malang Kids of the Crazy Lion).

[BAHASA INDONESIA] Paris of East Java; kondisi alam yang indah, iklim yang sejuk dan kota yang bersih, membuat Malang bagaikan kota "Paris"-nya Jawa Timur. Sebagai Kota Pesiar, Kota Peristirahatan, juga Kota Pendidikan, situasi kota yang tenang, penduduknya yang ramah, harga makanan yang relatif murah dan fasilitas pendidikannya sangat cocok untuk belajar. Sedikitnya ada lima universitas negeri yang berdiri di Malang dan puluhan atau mungkin ratusan perguruan tinggi swasta. Kota Militer; Malang terpilih sebagai Kota Kesatrian. Di Malang didirikan tempat pelatihan militer, asrama dan mess perwira di sekitar lapangan Rampal, dan pada zaman Jepang dibangun lapangan terbang "Sundeng" di kawasan Perumnas sekarang. Kota Sejarah, sebagai kota yang menyimpan misteri embrio tumbuhnya kerajaan-kerajaan besar seperti Singosari, Kediri, Mojopahit, Demak, dan Mataram. Salah satu yang terkenal di Malang adalah tradisi sepak bolanya. AREMA merupakan klub utama kebanggaan masyarakat Malang. Para pendukungnya menyebut dirinya Arek Malang Singo Edan.

Video Militia workshop in Malang took place due to collaboration between ruangrupa and the Insomnium community, a community whose members are mostly students or alumni of the Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The community conducts photography projects, workshops, and short-films screenings. Four participants took part in the workshop, conducted on June 2 to June 8, 2007.
Workshop OK. Video Militia di Malang berlangsung atas kerjasama ruangrupa dengan komunitas Insomnium, sebuah komunitas yang sebagian besar anggotanya adalah mahasiswa dan alumni Universitas Muhammadyah Malang. Aktivitas kelompok ini adalah membuat proyek fotografi, workshop dan pemutaran film pendek Workshop diikuti oleh empat peserta pada tangga 2-8 Juni 2007.

[ENGLISH] The week-long workshop produced five video works, with the town of Malang being the grand idea behind all of them. Jancok (F**ck!) is an experimental documentary video about words that the people of Malang often utter when they are emotional. Round 1 is a performance video that tries to criticize the existence of shopping center in the town. Arema Tidak Ke Mana-Mana! (AREMA Stays Put!) is a documentary video about the fanatism toward the pride of the town, the club AREMA, Crazy Lion. Then there is Peta Ngombe (The Map of Drinks) is a video that utilizes drinking as a frame to explain about the town of Malang.

[BAHASA INDONESIA] Selama seminggu, workshop menghasilkan lima karya video dengan kota Malang sebagai ide besar. Jancok, sebuah video dokumenter yang eksperimentatif tentang kosakata yang sering terdengar saat masyarakat Malang meluapkan sesuatu yang emosional. Round 1, video performance yang mencoba mengkritik kehadiran pusat perbelanjaan di kota ini. Arema Tidak Ke Mana-Mana! adalah video dokumenter tentang bagaimana fanatisme terhadap sebuah kebanggaan kota yaitu AREMA Singo Edan. Terakhir, Peta Ngombe sebuah video yang menggunakan ngombe (berarti minum, namun lazim berkonotasi minum minuman keras) sebagai jendela untuk menjelaskan kota Malang.
