(ENGLISH) Jogjakarta, or the Special Territory of Jogjakarta, is granted the privilege of being a 'special territory' due to the central government's gratitude toward the Court of Jogjakarta, as the Court had firmly stood by the newborn Republic of Indonesia during the Revolution. The recognition to the Sultan as the leader or the king of the region is written in an act. The history of the Sultanate of Jogjakarta cannot be separated by the breaking up of the ancient Mataram Kingdom nearing the end of its reign in Java. The town is now also called as 'the town of students' due to the education facilities it has. It owns a firm tradition of art and is known to house thousands of artists. The first art university in Indonesia, the Indonesian Art Institute, was established there and has produced many Indonesian artists of national and international recognitions. In the past few years, many art-and-culture communities have been established in Jogjakarta by the youth. Aside from its art and culture, what makes Jogjakarta known throughout the world lately was also the earthquake disaster that had struck the town last year and claimed more than five thousands lives.
