GEMAH SAMPAH: LHO KOK MALAH NUMPUK? - Thrashes
From the OK.VIDEO Jakarta International Video Festival 2007. This video was produced during the OK. Video Militia workshop in Cirebon and was conducted by the Gardu Unik Sinau Community. The community works in the fields of art, theater, and performance. Most of the members are teachers, whether full time or part time. After holding a series of discussions and video production activities, on the last day there we screened the results of the workshop in a makeshift open-air theater along the river. 'Thrashes' is a video about the final dumpster of the town of Cirebon.

(ENGLISH) As a town situated on the North Coast of Java in West Java, Cirebon is one of the most crowded area on the northern coast. It is the main trading and migration route from the eastern side of Java to Jakarta and vice-versa, causing the people to have special characteristics in terms of the social and cultural aspects due to such circulation. In the twelfth century, Cirebon was a center of distribution and an Islamic court, which had been one of the most influential courts in terms of trade. With its port, Muara Jati, Cirebon was also an important port of call in Southeast Asia. Today, Cirebon has the motto of 'Berintan', an acronym of the Indonesian phrase of 'Working Hard without Expecting Any Rewards', adapted from the traditional saying of 'rame ing gawe, sepi ing pamrih'.
(BAHASA-INDONESIA) Sebagai sebuah kota yang berada di pesisir Laut Jawa di Jawa Barat, Cirebon adalah salah satu wilayah terpadat di Jalur Pantura. Sebuah jalur utama perdagangan dan migrasi dari timur Jawa ke Jakarta dan sebaliknya. Sehingga masyarakatnya memiliki karateristik tersendiri dalam hal sosial-budaya akibat sirkulasi masyarakat itu. Pada abad XIII, Cirebon adalah pusat penyebaran dan kerajaan Islam di Jawa Barat. Kerajaan Islam di Cirebon pernah menjadi salah satu kerajaan yang berpengaruh bagi aktivitas perdagangan dan pelabuhan di Asia Tenggara dengan adanya Pelabuhan Muara Jati. Saat ini, motto Cirebon adalah BERINTAN -Banyak Bekerja Tanpa Mengharapkan Imbalan (Rame Ing Gawe Suci Ing Pamrih).
(ENGLISH) Workshop OK. Video Militia in Cirebon was conducted by the Gardu Unik Sinau Community, which was established in 2006. The community works in the fields of art, theater, and performance, and was founded by Nico Broer, Agus Suwanda, Mulyana Buru, and Iskandar Abenk. Most of the members are teachers, whether full time or part time. The workshop took place on May 23 to May 29, 2007, involving fourteen participants who were all active members of the Gardu Unik Sinau Community. After holding a series of discussions and video production activities, on the last day there we screened the results of the workshop in a makeshift open-air theater along the river. It was an exciting closing night as the people living in the area, government officials, cultural activists, and other art communities were also invited.
(BAHASA-INDONESIA) Workshop OK. Video Militia di Cirebon dilakukan di Komunitas Gardu Unik Sinau yang berdiri sejak 2006. Komunitas yang bergerak di bidang seni rupa, teater dan pertunjukan ini, didirikan oleh Nico Broer, Agus Suwanda, Mulyana Bulu dan Iskandar Abenk. Sebagian besar anggotanya adalah pengajar, baik sebagai guru tetap atau paruh waktu. Workshop berlangsung dari 23 sampai 29 Mei 2007, melibatkan empatbelas peserta yang semuanya adalah anggota aktif Komunitas Gardu Unik Sinau. Setelah melakukan serangkaian diskusi dan produksi video, pada hari terakhir diadakan pemutaran karya jadi workshop di layar tancep di pinggir kali. Sebuah penutupan yang ramai karena turut mengundang penduduk sekitar, pegawai pemerintah, aktivis kebudayaan dan komunitas seni lainnya.
(ENGLISH) Some of the works produced in the workshop are: Rasa Batu (The Sense of Stone), about the stone-cutting factory that has created air pollution; Gemah Sampah: "Lho Kok Malah Numpuk" (Waste Abound: "Gee It's Become Too Much"), a video about the final dumpster of the town of Cirebon; Mancing (Fishing), a collaborative work by two persons from Cirebon who are now working in Jakarta making soap operas; and Segara Setu Patok (The Setu Patok Lake), about the lake that the people have forgotten, accompanied by typical folksong from Cirebon, played by the video maker, portraying the cheerful interactions of the people with their lake.
(BAHASA-INDONESIA) Beberapa karya yang dihasilkan dalam workshop ini antara lain: Rasa Batu, sebuah karya mengenai pabrik pemotongan batu yang menghasilkan polusi udara di lingkungan sekitarnya; Gemah Sampah: "Lho Kok Malah Numpuk" video tentang tempat pembuangan sampah akhir di Cirebon; Mancing, sebuah karya kolaborasi dua pekerja sinetron asal Cirebon yang bekerja di Jakarta; dan Segara Setu Patok, sebuah video musik tentang Situ Patok yang dilupakan masyarakatnya, dengan lagu khas Cirebon-an yang dibawakan sendiri oleh pembuat video, berupa interaksi masyarakat dengan danaunya secara riang-gembira.
