The Howard Government's attacks on students, crystallized in legislation introducing so-called Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU), were met with determined opposition from students across the spectrum, as well as from education unions and supporters in the community. Melbourne saw a series of public rallies, many of which were reported on Melbourne Indymedia, if largely ignored in the mainstream media.
