Walk Against Warming 2007 - Melbourne

by Peter last modified 2007-11-13 17:59

Scenes from the second annual Walk Against Warming in Melbourne, starting with a rally at the State Library, followed by a very leisurely stroll down Swanston Street to the Alexandra Gardens. There was an astonishing range of placards, costumes, banners, props, not to mention age groups and affiliations - all demanding action from politicians on the burning issue of climate change.

Full description

Brazilian musicians MelSamba provided the warmup, as last year, and the speakers at the State Library included World Vision CEO Tim Costello. There was an astonishing range of placards, costumes, banners, props, not to mention age groups and affiliations - all demanding action from politicians on the burning issue of climate change.

Estimates of numbers reported by the mainstream media varied from 20,000 to 50,000, making this the largest of the day's events across the country. Whatever the actual figure, it took 25 minutes for the walk to pass a single vantage point on Swanston Street. The day ended with entertainment in the Alexandra Gardens, courtesy of The Counterfeit Gypsies.

Looking back more carefully I see it's not strictly true to say this was the 'second' annual Walk Against Warming: it was at least the third, as there was an event of the same name in December 2005.It was admittedly much smaller, and was held at Albert Park lake rather than the city.
