Amphon (last name witheld) a.k.a "Uncle SMS", a 61-year-old man, received widespread interest after he was prosecuted for sending an SMS considered in breach of Thailand's lese majeste law.
Since the beginning of this case, it has drawn a lot of attention from activists, academics, international and national press and became a controversial topic online.
When he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the debate about the punishment and doubts towards the justice system became a large controversial topic in Thai society, and has led to initiatives calling for the abolishing of the article 112 or lese majeste law.
