Full Description
Sri Lanka is an island situated along the strategically important Indian sea route. It is a middle income country which has a population of approximately 20 million people.
The Southern Transport Development Project (STDP) is a highly controversial highway project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the Sri Lankan Government. Stage two of the project is ongoing and it has created death, doom, destruction and social unrest. This project is a prime example of the failure of ADB safeguard policies at ground level on environment, resettlement and indigenous peoples. There are serious issues yet to be addressed by all parties.
