Camp for Climate Action

by Stacey Lobo last modified 2008-04-30 21:38

Climate change seems to be the new hot topic, incessantly debated everywhere from the media and government to local lobby groups and universities. However, all this talk is urgently required to be converted into action, starting at a grass-roots level. Over five days, the Camp for Climate Action will provide an interactive and sustainable forum that encourages people to learn, participate and join together in an effort to terminate fossil fuel emissions.

Similar climate camps will be held around the world, including New Zealand and the UK, highlighting the issue as one of global precedence that requires global collective action.

Many organisations have jumped on board to support the Newcastle camp including Rising Tide, Australian Student Environment Network, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace Australia Pacific. The camp will consist of discussion forums, workshops, case studies and trainings, which are intended to stimulate a new breed of activists.

Directly aimed at prohibiting the use of coal fired power stations and coal mines in Newcastle - the largest coal exporting facility in the world, the camp is centered on collective action through non-violent means. Coal exports are Australia's single most harmful producer of climate change, emphasising the urgent need to have them banned and replaced with environmentally friendly alternatives. The exponential rise in greenhouse pollution, the fluctuation of global temperatures and overwhelming consumption of scarce resources are already causing major disruptions to today's environment and society.

Apart from attending the camp, there are lots of ways you can get involved with the Camp for Climate Action initiative:

Join the collective and assist in the logistics of the camp - from offering legal advice to financial management and first aid, there is sure to be a task that suits your interests and skills.

Please do not hesitate to contact one of the organisers, they would love to hear from you!

There are also opportunities to help put together a climate reader for the camp which will be published online and in print. Please send any original content regarding climate change, potential outlines for dealing with climate change or any social movements which relate to the climate justice campaign to reader@climatecamp.org.au
