Full Description

On the 16th of December 2008 forest and climate activists shut down the Triabunna woodchip mill in southern Tasmania. This was part of a nation wide protest against the Federal Government's release of the Climate Change White Paper, revealing pitiful and internationally humiliating targets of 5% reduction in emissions by 2020.
Activists shut down the mill for over seven hours with three activists locking on to the woodchip conveyer belt and four locking on to machinery, resulting in an operational cost estimated at half a million dollars.

Gunns Ltd who own the Triabunna mill are responsible for the woodchipping and exporting of over 5 million tonnes of woodchips per year, with most of these woodchips coming from old growth and high conservation valued forests. Pristine valleys in Tasmania home to wild rivers, ancient forests, threatened species and significant cultural heritage are subject to industrial scale logging operations. Up to 90% of trees harvested in these iconic valleys end up in a woodchip pile.

On the 6th of January 2009 Gunns Ltd and Carlton Frame issued a writ on 13 activists, claiming damages resulting from the chipmill shutdown. In return, activists have launched a defence and counterclaim against Gunns Ltd and Carlton Frame, in regards to deceptive and misleading comments concerning the proposed Gunns Pulp Mill. Gunns have publicly claimed that no old growth forest will be used to feed the mill, when in fact maps and figures show the opposite. These misleading comments breach the Trade Practices Act 1974 for misleading Australians and potential investors.

Our legal defence and Counterclaim could take years to resolve and will incur massive costs so we are seeking funds to help fight the Forces of Darkness.
