Summary

From wherever we stand, if we are willing to see the stories of suffering and survival, the stories of hope and happiness, they are often right before our eyes. It is in this context, with the tools of progressive media, that members of the public have the chance to capture and share a story. Whether they are proclaimed filmmakers and activists, or just concerned people documenting what they witness, the opportunity to produce and exhibit films has increased with accessibility and affordability of the required technology. Progressive forms of media hold a power to be used as tools for positive social activism. Examples of progressive media are the more affordable production equipment now available (even as features on standard mobile phones), on‐line exhibition, guerilla‐style video campaigns and community screenings, just to name a few.

  • What opportunities are there for exhibition?
  • How can these films and pieces of footage being used for social change?
  • What are some of the ethical and legal implications?
  • Is there a filter or guardian of content in regards to its reliability and accuracy?
