TONG TANA - Free of Sin

TONG TANA (Penan for “into the forest”) is a series of metaphorical stories inspired by the diminishing forests of the world, deep concerns on their rapid urbanisation and the dispossession from land that troubles the remaining forested countries. TONG TANA draws direct influence from the indigenous peoples of Sarawak (one of two states of Malaysia on the island of Borneo), struggling to maintain their customary right to the land they inhabit, feed themselves from and protect.

Full Description

TONG TANA – cabaret as structured improvisation composed and performed by nomadic composer and media artist, Andrew Garton in collaboration with the South African trio, Benguela and visualist, Andrew Parker.

Free of Sin, from TONG TANA was performed on 31 July 2009 at the Alliance Francaise, Cape Town, South Africa.

TONG TANA was accompanied by projected visual works by Garton and Cape Town’s Andrew Parker. They comprised of Garton’s installation series, NOTHINGKNOWN, based on the forest communities of Sarawak, many of whom are struggling to sustain their rights to customary land.

These include the Penan, one of over 30 indigenous communities in Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo, who have prevented the logging of their forests for over 30 years, and continue to do so, but at significant cost.

TONG TANA brought a microcosm of Sarawak’s indigenous communities to Cape Town in a unique, one time only performance combining Garton’s vast vocal capacities, soundscape and media arts skills with the legendary sonic armoury of South Africa’s Benguela and visual installation mastery of Cape Town’s, Andrew Parker.
