Indonesian Authorities Suspected Of Launching Cyber Attacks On NGO Websites

Thu, 28 Oct 2010 20:38:20 +0100

The websites of several NGO groups campaigning for human rights in West Papua have been under a serious DDoS attack for most of this week, forcing them offline as their servers have been overloaded. In the UK press, the finger of suspicion is focusing on the Indonesian authorities.

Survival International, the Asian Human Rights Commission, Friends of People Close to Nature, Free West Papua Campaign and West Papua Media Alerts have seen their websites crippled in what is being described as a 'co-ordinated cyber terrorism act'. All these campaign groups hosted video footage showing Indonesian troops torturing West Papuans, which has heaped shame on the Muslim majority country .

FROM FRIENDS OF PEOPLE CLOSE TO NATURE

www.fpcn-global.org (also currently overloaded)

Our fpcn-global.org & naturvoelker.org were among many human rights & tribal advocacy websites targeted in cyber attack against West Papuan sympathetic NGOs & charitable groups, worldwide.

The Asian Human Rights Commission, West Papua Media Alert, Free West Papua Campaign UK and Survival International, were also victims of the massive and coordinated cyber botnet attack!

"fPcN Germany's Chairman 'Steffen Keulig' said today, “fPcN interCultural and our network, will not bend or bow to such intimation or cyber assault. Attacks of this nature, only serve to renew and strengthen our resolve and determination to work harder for justice and human rights for the native populations of West Papua and disaffected tribal peoples the world over. We believe that the attacks came from the Indonesian government or military authorities. The forces against us are colossal like Goliath vs. David, but we will never give up!”

The fPcN webmaster said “ It is not the first attack, we have been victim of and certainly won't be the last. In this most recent West Papua torture video related attack, we throated the first syn flood DDoS attack, by adjusting some server configs. But that wasn't the end, they came back 12hrs later with increased volume, using a similar attack method, but with tweaked scripts”

Our website, was effectively off-line for 12 of the 18 hrs of the first attack and when the second started around 6pm CET Thursday 28th and growing more intense, we decided to take the server offline because it was to overloaded to function very well. But we are not down and out! You can be sure of that.

Just another reason why we need cyber security trainings!

true that! but some of those sites moderators are the most security concious and tech skilled activists there are. i guess the time and resources needed for an unfunded NGO to deal with such attacks - while also dealing with distributing the leaked videos - would be massive. i'm guessing your name sugguests that you might be able to help out ? always welcomoe)
