Instead of rice, the staple food of the indigenous people in the Mentawai islands is sago. Due to the food uniformity and cultivation that had been promoted by the New Order reign (Orde Baru) since the 70s, the Mentawai people had lost their food identity, and have been heavily relying on importing rice and other food from mainland Sumatra to survive.
In addition, in the attempt to convert them to Islam, the authorities lured the Jayarak-practicing Mentawai people with free accommodation and lands as a place of worship.

Akibat penyeragaman pangan beras selama beberapa dekade, masyarakat Mentawai kehilangan identitas pangannya dan menjadikannya bergantung pada pasokan pangan dari daratan Sumatera.
Kondisi ini membuat mereka rentan dan kehilangan kedaulatan atas pangannya sendiri seperti sagu dan keladi.
Tapi penghancuran ini dimulai dari pemaksaan agama dan keyakinan Arat Sabulungan.
