At Stake

AT STAKE is a brave and eye-opening documentary tackling taboo issues that many women are facing in the world's most populous Islamic country. The film is the result of PROJECT CHANGE!, a master class documentary workshop, in which four projects from five emerging filmmakers were selected and produced in an anthology format.

The topics range from female genital mutilation, the conflict over a woman's marital status and her access to reproductive health services, sex workers, female migrant workers, and the difficulties of being a lesbian in Indonesian society.

Dark Sun

Short film by David Nerlich 1998. From deification to demonisation, the changing icon of the life-giving sun in the age of ozone depletion marks a spiritual decay that follows in the wake of the physical decay of our natural atmospheric defenses. The advent of an evil sun icon also represents a neurotic abnegation of blame onto the sun for what is really the result of destructive human activity. This 3D animation follows a dreaming monologue, with transient voices and imagery floating and exchanging meanings in a disturbed psychic sea.

Through the Wire

In March 2002, detainees of Australia's Woomera detention centre staged a mass breakout in a spontaneous and desperate bid for freedom. Aided by hundreds of committed social activists protesting Australia's treatment of asylum seekers in mandatory detention, the breakout captured the attention and interest of human rights groups around the globe. At the frontline of the breakout, filmmaker Pip Starr captures the raw emotion and urgency of the event to create a damning indictment of Australia's inhumane immigration policies.

The Niger Delta in Nigeria is an environmental disaster zone after fifty years of oil exploitation. One and a half million tons of crude oil have been spilled into the creeks, farms and forests.
