As part of the British Council’s “Creative Cities” programme in East Asia, 17 urban ethnic performers from New Zealand were asked to co-write and perform a show with the acclaimed UK string section, Urban Soul Orchestra. The result was two weeks of intense rehearsal, a coming together of multi-language artists and performers, and an amazing experience had by all. The documentary follows the rehearsal and writing process through to the live shows in Auckland and at Womad Taranaki in March 2009, and includes live show footage and interviews with various performers from Auckland and the UK, on the way to creating a unique diverse snapshot of urban New Zealand. Fonterra Climate Crimes

On September 16 and 17 2009 Greenpeace New Zealand and activists staged a massive action, blocking a shipment of palm kernel animal feed from Indonesia from entering Tauranga Port. The feed was destined for Fonterra dairy farms. They are calling on New Zealand PM John Key to halt imports of the product due to its impact on climate change and address intensive dairy farming in New Zealand. Read more…

This video is documentation of a video art installation at MIC Toi Rerehiko gallery in 2008. Video sources include the distributed creativity of stormchase videos on YouTube from Australia and New Zealand and images of storms in the Asia-Pacific region of visible light, water vapour and infrared satellite weather maps. The latter were produced in collaboration with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. I hope the work will continue to be re-edited and shared online. Read more…

Save Happy Valley train blockade court hearing 1

In late April 2007, two Save Happy Valley activists locked on to train tracks in Christchurch to stop a coal train from reaching Lytellton Port. After several hours, they were removed and arrested, and a third activist was also arrested and charged with "communicating with a prisoner". In October 2005, the New Zealand Defence Industry Association held a weapons conference at Te Papa, the national museum. Several days of protests were held against this conference, with the biggest being on the opening day. In 2004, Prime Minister Helen Clark and the New Zealand Labour government passed legislation declaring Crown ownership of the New Zealand foreshore and seabed. The indigenous people of Aotearoa / New Zealand - The Maaori people - having suffered the effects of land confiscation for over 150 years, recognised this legislation for what it was - land confiscation. Kia Tupato (Be Careful) features the late Sir John Turei as he presents Maori views on Genetic Modification with reference to the land and the teaching of his Grandparents. Sir John was considered a bridge between the cultures of Maori and non-Maori in New Zealand, and received many honours from the Government including a Knighthood.
