In 2009, Indonesian band Netral used the tunes of Papuan song 'Apuse' for their hit song 'Garuda di Dadaku'. The song was used to motivate the Indonesian national soccer team and its supporters. Many Papuans though were not to happy with the idea. On December 10, 2011, Papuan Voices and Gorby Comen Rasta took back the song and return it to its rightful owner, the people of Papua. Read more…

One Love Rwanda

A collaboration to disrupt existing boundaries in Rwanda. In January 2011 a Rwandan hip hop artist joined with an Indigenous choir in what became a ground breaking music collaboration that fused traditional Batwa music with hip hop. The collaboration not only fused together two very different styles of music but also brought together two distinct social groups. Pakachi and a couple of friends jammed with the choir on one of Rwanda's thousand hills and what emerged was a form of artistic expression that not only entertains but disrupts existing barriers between people. Musik merupakan sumber potensial perlawanan budaya di Papua Barat. Hal ini tercermin dalam diri Arnold Ap. Despite Soeharto's propaganda, 'Genjer Genjer' is actually not the anthem of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), but about the hardship of lives during the Japanese occupation where food was scarce and genjer vegetable became an option for food. It was widely banned, but now it's making a comeback. Tika is an Indonesian folk singer who often performs the song with her group, Tika and the Dissidents. The writer of the song itself, Muhammad Arief, was killed for being a PKI sympathiser, Read more…

Taufiq's Concert
Read more…

As part of the British Council’s “Creative Cities” programme in East Asia, 17 urban ethnic performers from New Zealand were asked to co-write and perform a show with the acclaimed UK string section, Urban Soul Orchestra. The result was two weeks of intense rehearsal, a coming together of multi-language artists and performers, and an amazing experience had by all. The documentary follows the rehearsal and writing process through to the live shows in Auckland and at Womad Taranaki in March 2009, and includes live show footage and interviews with various performers from Auckland and the UK, on the way to creating a unique diverse snapshot of urban New Zealand. Osme Show - Tukupulurute
Timorese artist and actor (Balibo Five) Osme Gonsalves raps and combines the songs "Le'ule" & "Tupukur" about the harvest seasons. The Fataluku (Los Palos language) songs were usually sang by rice and corn farmers from ancestral periods and they did it while stomping on rice paddies to separate the seeds. "Le'ule" is like the Timorese "tebe-tebe" war song, and "Tupuku" means owl. Read more…

TONG TANA - Free of Sin

TONG TANA (Penan for “into the forest”) is a series of metaphorical stories inspired by the diminishing forests of the world, deep concerns on their rapid urbanisation and the dispossession from land that troubles the remaining forested countries. TONG TANA draws direct influence from the indigenous peoples of Sarawak (one of two states of Malaysia on the island of Borneo), struggling to maintain their customary right to the land they inhabit, feed themselves from and protect. Music video of John Butler in the Styx Valley, Tasmania. Many people have visited the Styx Valley in Tasmania during the battle to save the old growth forest and the giant trees aged hundreds of years from logging multinationals such as Gunns Ltd who clear fell these areas for pulp. The singer/songwriter John Butler performed up a tree sit 85metres up during a time when volunteers, The Wilderness Society and Greenpeace occupied the area and many lived up on the tree sit maintaining it for five months.
