On November 16, 2004, seven striking Luisita farm workers were killed in the brutal dispersal of police and military forces in the Cojuangco clan’s sugar estate in Tarlac, Central Luzon, Philippines. The 2004 massacre committed by the Philippine military was in response to the massive joint labor strike waged by the two unions inside Hacienda Luisita Incorporated (HLI)– United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) and Central Azucarera de Tarlac Labor Union (CATLU)– representing a firm alliance between sugarcane farm workers on the field and sugar-processing factory workers. The two unions had been waging a labor strike for several months due to the imposition of a a starvation daily wage of Php9.50. Now, six years later, the Hacienda Luisita Massacre remains unresolved. Ang Pagbawi sa Luisita (Reclaiming Luisita) is a new documentary by Mayday Multimedia, a workers’ audio-visual group that also produced the Hacienda Luisita massacre documentary, Sa Ngalan ng Tubo. Ang Pagbawi sa Luisita is a creative chronicle of the history of the the farmers’ struggle. In 2006, the Philippine Government activated the long dead Mining Act to encourage multi-nationals in giving mining industry a big come back in the archipelago. Resulting to a numerous tragedy including landslides, flash floods and many other unimaginable calamities that killed thousands of people and devastated all livelihoods. Despite all this, nobody was held accountable to these horrible tragedies. Recently (September 26, 2009), a big typhoon struck Metro Manila and flooded the whole metropolis for the first time.
