The resistance of Kulon Progo Farmers on Java's South Coast continues, fighting the mining plans of PT Jogja Magasa Iron and their Australian financers, Indo Mines. One of their community members, Tukijo, is currently in prison, condemned to three years to satisfy the vengeful whims of the corporation. Their latest action was to occupy the provincial council building, after a 12-day hunger strike carried out by several community members and student activists in solidarity with their struggle. Since December 11, 2011, more than 100 activists and villagers from Jambi and Riau camped in front of the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta. They said the government has allowed private companies evicting villagers for the expansion of their explorations. Many of the campers also stitched their lips in protest. Penyiaran yang memanfaatkan ruang udara itu dimanfaatkan tetapi tidak untuk dikuasai. Sayangnya pemusatan media siaran di Indonesia justru mencederai prinsip-prinsip tersebut. Kondisi ini mendorong Koalisi Independen untuk Demokratisasi Penyiaran (KIDP) mengajukan Judicial review atas UU No 32 Tahun 2002 tentang Penyiaran. Puluhan warga berjoged diiringi lagu yang mengolok-olok polisi yang berjaga di Pengadilan Negeri Palu, Sulawesi Tengah, pada Rabu (04/01/2012), saat sidang kasus AAL, pelajar yang dituduh mencuri sandal jepit. Mahasiswa, aktivis, ibu-ibu hingga anak-anak menyebut polisi sebagai preman dan kurang ajar. Mereka mengungkapkan kekesalan pada aparat polisi yang telah bertindak sewenang-wenang. Aksi joged itu sebagai bentuk protes terhadap kepolisian karena menyeret seorang anak berumur 15 tahun ke pengadilan dengan tuduhan mencuri sandal. In 2009, Indonesian band Netral used the tunes of Papuan song 'Apuse' for their hit song 'Garuda di Dadaku'. The song was used to motivate the Indonesian national soccer team and its supporters. Many Papuans though were not to happy with the idea. On December 10, 2011, Papuan Voices and Gorby Comen Rasta took back the song and return it to its rightful owner, the people of Papua. Read more…

Witnesses talk about what really happened during West Papua's (supposed) Act of Free Choice (or in Indonesian Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat, PEPERA), in July 1969. The testimonies reject the Indonesian government's claim that the people of Papua willingly voted to be integrated with Indonesia. They say people were intimidated, tricked and even killed during the process.
