Since December 11, 2011, more than 100 activists and villagers from Jambi and Riau camped in front of the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta. They said the government has allowed private companies evicting villagers for the expansion of their explorations. Many of the campers also stitched their lips in protest. In 2011, despite ongoing repression, the Morning Star flag was once again flown across the country. In 2009, Indonesian band Netral used the tunes of Papuan song 'Apuse' for their hit song 'Garuda di Dadaku'. The song was used to motivate the Indonesian national soccer team and its supporters. Many Papuans though were not to happy with the idea. On December 10, 2011, Papuan Voices and Gorby Comen Rasta took back the song and return it to its rightful owner, the people of Papua. Read more…

Witnesses talk about what really happened during West Papua's (supposed) Act of Free Choice (or in Indonesian Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat, PEPERA), in July 1969. The testimonies reject the Indonesian government's claim that the people of Papua willingly voted to be integrated with Indonesia. They say people were intimidated, tricked and even killed during the process.
