The Malind tribe in Merauke is proud of its ecological traditions - each clan in the tribe is responsible for protecting a natural element. The Moiwend clan is responsible for the coconut trees and fruit. However, in recent times Malind youth have started using coconuts to make alcohol. The home-made drinks – which are much cheaper to buy than beer and spirits - have added to the town's problems. Now, some Malind elders are calling for the reinstatement of customary laws that would punish those who make use of coconuts in this way in order to save their tradition and their community. Lawyers from the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) and activists rallied outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on 24 October 2011, calling for the release of more than 50 Indonesian juveniles in Australian adult prisons. This is raw footage of Wednesday's attack by the Indonesian military and police on the Third Papuan People's Congress in Jayapura. The footage shows people dancing, soldiers closing in, and gun shots. The video was shot by several observers. The last sequence was shot while the camera person was hiding from gunfire. The rally organised by the National Committee for West Papua (KNPB) on August 2 2011 was led by Mako Tabuni from KNPB. The protesters were on the streets the whole day. There were more than 10,000 people, from Sentani, Jayapura as well as students from Abepura. The peaceful rally was organised to support the seminar by International Lawyer for West Papua (ILWP), initiated by Benny Wenda in London, the UK, which looked into the history of the 1969's People's Act of Free Choice (PEPERA). West Papuan political prisoner Filep Karma rejected the prison sentence remission offered by the Indonesian Government in correlation with the August 17 Independence Day. Karma said he preferred to serve out his normal sentence and demanded the Indonesian Government to apologise to the Papuan people for all the atrocities it has caused. Karama was arrested during a Morning Star flag rising on December 1, 2004. He is currently serving a 15 year sentence in Abepura Prison, Jayapura. Read more…

On December 1, 1969, the Dutch Government announced the preparation for the formation of an independent Papua nation. Flag and song was first introduced. However, in 1963, the Indonesian Armed Forces annexed Papua through its Trikora Operations. Until this day, the people of West Papua continue to fight for their freedom. On August 2, 2011, Papuan students took to the streets in Jakarta to remind the public of their struggle, and they also welcome the International Lawyers for West Papua who began the Road to Freedom Conference in London on the same day.
