Fifty years ago on December 1, 1961, West Papuans flew their flag for the first time in preparation for their independence from the Dutch. In 2011, despite ongoing repression, the Morning Star flag was once again flown across the country. Witnesses talk about what really happened during West Papua's (supposed) Act of Free Choice (or in Indonesian Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat, PEPERA), in July 1969. The testimonies reject the Indonesian government's claim that the people of Papua willingly voted to be integrated with Indonesia. They say people were intimidated, tricked and even killed during the process. New footage of the brutal police and military attack on the Third Papuan People's Congress in Jayapura on October 19, 2011. This mobile phone footage shows security forces rounding up Congress participants, the gunfire, and the large number of armed plain-clothes officers. The footage also shows the brutal assault on President-elect, Forkorus Yaboisembut, as he was dragged on to a sports field along with other participants. This is raw footage of Wednesday's attack by the Indonesian military and police on the Third Papuan People's Congress in Jayapura. The footage shows people dancing, soldiers closing in, and gun shots. The video was shot by several observers. The last sequence was shot while the camera person was hiding from gunfire. At 3.30pm Jayapura time, they fired warning shots and arrested hundreds of the attendees after the congress declared independence from Indonesia. The rally organised by the National Committee for West Papua (KNPB) on August 2 2011 was led by Mako Tabuni from KNPB. The protesters were on the streets the whole day. There were more than 10,000 people, from Sentani, Jayapura as well as students from Abepura. The peaceful rally was organised to support the seminar by International Lawyer for West Papua (ILWP), initiated by Benny Wenda in London, the UK, which looked into the history of the 1969's People's Act of Free Choice (PEPERA). Filep Karma Refuses Indonesia's Remission

West Papuan political prisoner Filep Karma rejected the prison sentence remission offered by the Indonesian Government in correlation with the August 17 Independence Day. Karma said he preferred to serve out his normal sentence and demanded the Indonesian Government to apologise to the Papuan people for all the atrocities it has caused. Karama was arrested during a Morning Star flag rising on December 1, 2004. He is currently serving a 15 year sentence in Abepura Prison, Jayapura. Read more…

A collaboration to disrupt existing boundaries in Rwanda. In January 2011 a Rwandan hip hop artist joined with an Indigenous choir in what became a ground breaking music collaboration that fused traditional Batwa music with hip hop. The collaboration not only fused together two very different styles of music but also brought together two distinct social groups. Pakachi and a couple of friends jammed with the choir on one of Rwanda's thousand hills and what emerged was a form of artistic expression that not only entertains but disrupts existing barriers between people.
