In addition to running a video sharing website, EngageMedia develops a video sharing web application, Plumi. Plumi is a package of software modules and customisations built on the popular open source content management framework Plone. EngageMedia also conducts research on free software video technologies.

Plumi is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and available for others to use and further develop. Almost all video sharing sites do not make their software available for others to utilise. We wish to make what we do here at EngageMedia possible for others to replicate. It's our contribution to creating truly democratic media, by helping independent video initiatives gain control over their own distribution infrastructure.

Plumi enables a wide array of functionality including:

• Video uploading in any format (over http)
• Large video file uploads via FTP
• Server-side mp4 and webM transcoding
• Embedded playback in the browser using an HTML5 video player
• Video Podcasting: RSS1 plus RSS2 feeds with media enclosures created automatically from taxonomy items - e.g country, genre, topics and member folders
• Tagging
• WYSIWYG editor for text entry
• Sophisticated work flow, roles and permissions system
• Live search and RSS feeds from search results
• Customised Workspaces for hosting files and other works, which can be made private or shared only with particular site members
• Custom templates for publishing and browsing videos
• Custom profile page for site members with personal latest videos vodcast feed
• Open Content Licensing including Creative Commons
• Automatic creation and seeding of BitTorrent files upon video upload
• Views/downloads statistics for each video
• Subtitling via integrations with the Universal Subtitles project
