EngageMedia And Papuan Voices At Freedom Film Fest 2012

For the second time in September, EngageMedia was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this time promoting our work and presenting our curated session of videos from Papuan Voices at the Freedom Film Festival 2012. The seminal festival is organised by our partners KOMAS, and will continue to run in 7 other locations till the end of October.

Our selection of 4 videos, which included Awin Meke, Love Letter To Soldier, Ironic Survival, and Left To Survive, screened to a crowd of over 200 people on the first afternoon of the 2-day event.

Filmmaker Wensi Fatabun and myself were present to participate in a post-screening discussion, where questions and comments were raised regarding the contents of the films, as well as the socio-political situation in West Papua. Wensi was also video interviewed by MalaysiaKini (http://www.malaysiakini.tv/video/24444/freedom-film-festival-2012-is-more-than-indie-films.html).

Several friends from Camp Sambel (Melayu Video Camp) were also present at the festival, including Mahamasabree Jehloh and Shafie Dris, who had their films screened as well. The occassion served well for all of us to discuss our various projects and collaborations.

We also reached out to other attendees with an information booth, distributing our postcards, posters, and stickers. Thanks to our continued work in Malaysia, many seemed to already know of our organisation, while others were curious to find out more.
