Cinemata, a video platform for social issue and environmental films in the Asia-Pacific, is hosting the online screening of the 36th edition of Gawad Alternatibo Para sa Pelikula at Video (Alternative Film and Video Festival) or Gawad Alternatibo. Established in 1987, the competition organized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is the longest-running film festival in Southeast Asia.
Over 70 films from this year’s Gawad Alternatibo will be available for free public viewing on Cinemata.org from August 21 to September 21, 2024.
This marks Cinemata’s third collaboration with the CCP Film, Broadcast, and New Media Department, continuing our shared mission to bring powerful, thought-provoking Filipino alternative cinema to broader audiences across the Asia-Pacific region.
Jen Tarnate, Lead Curator of Cinemata, says, “Promoting alternative and independent social issue films is central to Cinemata. We are dedicated to providing a platform for young and emerging filmmakers, offering fresh perspectives and amplifying socially critical voices.”
She added: “Our long-standing partnership with Gawad Alternatibo underscores the strong demand from Asia-Pacific audiences for free, accessible films that go beyond mainstream content. Our shared goal with CCP Film, Broadcast, and New Media is to showcase diverse narratives that challenge perspectives and spark meaningful conversations. We are excited to present this year’s selection, reflecting the vibrant and ever-evolving landscape of Filipino alternative cinema.”
