EngageMedia invites young filmmakers and visual storytellers to participate in Tech Tales Youth 2, a film production project to raise awareness of internet freedom and digital rights issues in Bangladesh and Malaysia. The works produced will be part of the second edition of Tech Tales Youth, which aims to bring in the creative voices of young filmmakers into the digital rights movement, broaden their knowledge of how human rights and digital rights are intertwined, and how they can utilise filmmaking for advocacy and impact.
The second edition of the Tech Tales Youth program will comprise six filmmakers between the ages of 18 to 30 who will each produce a six- to eight-minute short film on digital rights issues. In particular, we are looking for documentaries, fiction, animation, and other short narrative video productions.
To apply, complete the form below by Sunday, August 11, 2024, 23:59 Kuala Lumpur time (UTC+8). Successful candidates will be notified by August 24, 2024. Selected filmmakers will be awarded up to USD 3,200 each for film and impact production, as well as travel support to a digital rights, advocacy and impact filmmaking workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the third week of September. The Malaysia and Bangladesh premieres of the collection will be held in December 2024.
Tech Tales Youth 2 builds on the success of Tech Tales: Films about Digital Rights in the Asia-Pacific and Tech Tales Youth Philippines and Thailand, two film collection of 15 short films that highlight human rights stories in the digital age. The project has a strong emphasis on mentorship and peer and community support, with successful applicants providing guidance in shaping their story ideas to align with key digital rights issues relevant to their specific contexts, as well as ways to maximise their films’ impact.
