This is a press release from Goethe-Institut Indonesia
Goethe-Institut Indonesia, in collaboration with EngageMedia and ICT Watch, proudly presents “Digital Rights Cinema” on February 24, 2024, at GoetheHaus Jakarta. This event will feature the screening of eight short films addressing digital rights issues, ranging from illegal online lending (pinjol) and data leaks in e-commerce to challenges faced by online motorcycle taxi drivers.
Stephanie Müller, Head of Information at Goethe-Institut for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, expressed the hope that by visually conveying crucial issues to the public, the films would stimulate discussions and pave the way for improved internet governance in the region. Seven of the eight films showcased are part of the Tech Tales Youth project by EngageMedia, which is aimed at complementing human rights advocacy efforts in the Asia-Pacific region.
EngageMedia’s Project Manager and Creative Producer of Tech Tales, King Catoy, highlighted the role of young filmmakers in supporting the digital rights movement by expressing their creativity through short films. The films address collective struggles such as personal data leaks, fraud, unequal access, and injustices in the digital workforce. The eighth film, a documentary titled Quick Money Fold on the Internet, produced by ISOC Foundation and Migrant Care, adds another dimension to the exploration of contemporary digital technology utilization.
Following the film screening, a discussion featuring Donny B.U. (digital literacy practitioner) and Onno W. Purbo (information technology expert) will delve into digital issues in Indonesia. The event will commence at 2:00 PM WIB at GoetheHaus Jakarta.
The films to be screened include:
- Digital Rights Lab (Thailand)
- Lugal Abu (Philippines)
- Doxxed (Thailand)
- This is How Her Home was Built (Philippines)
- Black Hole (Thailand)
- Nanay (Philippines)
- On Our Own Time (Philippines)
- Quick Money Fold on the Internet (Indonesia)
By depicting the challenges and opportunities presented by digital technology, the organizers believe that these films will inspire collaboration in utilizing technology productively, positively, safely, and comfortably.
