About the Role
As part of EngageMedia’s Human Rights Technology initiative, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Open Learning Specialist to lead the development and implementation of digital security community platforms in Asia-Pacific. This role will focus primarily on establishing a structured, context-specific microcredentialing programme (digisec.school) for human rights defenders (HRDs), while also supporting the growth of our knowledge management system (digisec.wiki) and resource network (digisec.network).
This is a unique opportunity to shape and scale learning systems that protect and empower grassroots activists working in increasingly hostile digital environments across the region.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead the digisec.school microcredentialing programme
- Design and implement a progressive, modular curriculum tailored to the digital security needs of HRDs in Asia-Pacific.
- Develop a flexible blended learning model combining self-paced modules, live sessions, and (where possible) in-person workshops.
- Create topic-specific credentials covering areas such as:
- Secure communications
- Device and data security
- Threat modelling and risk assessment
- Online campaign safety
- Circumventing censorship
- Digital wellness and burnout prevention
- Build contextualised assessment systems (e.g. tests, practical tasks, interviews).
- Ensure the programme reflects regional realities rather than Western-centric frameworks.
2. Contribute to digisec.wiki and digisec.network
- Organise and facilitate regional edit-a-thons to expand digisec.wiki content.
- Support localisation of resources into key regional languages (e.g. Burmese, Khmer, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia, Thai).
- Build and strengthen digisec.network, including partnership development, mentorship pathways, and referral protocols for technical support.
3. Support programme evaluation and improvement
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance the initiative’s effectiveness and relevance.
- Contribute to monitoring and evaluation processes, including reporting on outcomes and documenting impact.
Who We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications:
- Proven experience in delivering digital security or online safety training in South or Southeast Asia.
- Familiarity with competency-based learning models and microcredentialing systems.
- Deep understanding of digital threats faced by HRDs in the region.
- Experience developing or adapting contextualised learning content and tools for diverse learners.
- Strong organisational and remote project management skills.
- Excellent communication skills in English and at least one regional language.
- Experience with community platforms, wikis, or collaborative knowledge systems.
Contract & Compensation
- 12-month consultancy from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, renewable depending on funding.
- Consultancy fee: USD 1,500/month, with deliverables and milestones to be mutually agreed upon.
- Fully remote work arrangement within UTC+5 to UTC+11 time zones.
