The Munir Said Thalib Memorial Lecture marks the 5th anniversary of the assassination of Indonesian Human Rights Champion Munir Said Thalib. By ‘Remembering Munir’ we remember all defenders of human rights in Indonesia who have been killed or disappeared without justice. “[Munir’s case] will be the test of our history.” -Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono “What we should fear most is the feeling of fear, because the feeling of fear will destroy our judgement, our logic.” -Indonesian Human Rights Champion Munir Said Thalib (1965-2004 ) With special guest speaker: Prof. Tim Lindsey Tim Lindsey is an ARC Federation Fellow, Professor of Law and Director of the Asian Law Centre at Melbourne University. He is also Co-Director of Melbourne University’s Centre for Islamic Law and Society.

The 2007 Reelife Short Film Festival is a celebration of Australia’s talented young filmmakers, with 15 amazing films scheduled for the National tour. This year’s finalists represent the four points of the nation with contributions ranging from Margaret River WA, Reynella SA, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Their films span the gamut of issues, from homelessness, to Workers Rights, to avoiding the pressure of an interfering mother to get married! Genres are broad as well from comedy to drama, experimental, mime and a western. The films display an incredible mix of intelligence, style and nuance that reflects a maturity and artistry that is very exciting for Australia's next generation of filmmakers.
CHIKA: A Documentary Performance
This is the story of Chika Honda. Chika is a real person. She is a Japanese woman who spent a decade in Australian jails for a crime she has always insisted she did not commit. She was one of a Japanese tour group who were arrested for importation of heroin in 1992. She was released on parole in November 2002 and is now living in Japan.

"Fire of the Island" follows Isabell Coe, Robert Corowa and co. as they establish the Sacred Fire and move the Aboriginal Tent Embassy to Cockatoo Island after the Sydney Olympics, 2000. Robert Corowa and film maker G K Young will present the documentary. Percussionist extraordinaire, Louis Burdett will perform a live score. Bang!
Melbourne Rally Stop the Intervention in Northern Territory

On Saturday 20th June supporters of Aboriginal rights in Melbourne will be marking the two-year anniversary of the Northern Territory intervention with a solidarity rally in the CBD, followed by a public meeting at Trades Hall. The events will feature live music and a range of speakers, including a woman from the Alice Springs town camps. I'm coordinating a group of people to film this event and upload online soon-ish after the rally. I would need people with filming equipment/audio/photography... Cyclone Nargis killed 140,000 people and left over 1 million more homeless in Burma on May 2nd 2008. One year later thousands of cyclone survivors are still struggling every day to meet their basic needs. Burma Campaign Sydney is hosting a candle light vigil to commemerate the anniversary.

A One Day Conference - WEST PAPUA UPDATE
The visit of Prime Minister Julia Gillard to Indonesia from 1st to 2nd November 2010 put under the spotlight indigenous Papuans being tortured by Indonesian Security Forces on two videos that have circulated widely, and the Indonesian government has admitted they are real. The Military Court in Jayapura (Papua) sentenced several soldiers to just a few months in prison, instead of the Human Rights Court trying this case.
