The Other Side of the Mirror

by Yerry Nikholas Borang June 08, 2010
Taring Padi and Lafadl are organizing a 4th anniversary commemoration of the Lapindo Mud Disaster in Porong, East Java, Indonesia. The title of the event is "The Other Side of the Mirror", because they think that although many people in Indonesia already know about what happened in Porong through the mass media, there is an other side to the story. On May 7-8 2010, there will be a screening of documentary films about the Lapindo mud flow.

The NGO Lafadl has been working closely with the mud victims for the last 2 years, and they have invited Taring Padi to work with the victims to keep their spirit up facing this tragedy that continues until this day. Taring Padi have completed a survey of Porong and met with many of the victims, and together decided to hold a festival on the 29th of May 2010 coinciding with the 4th anniversary of the beginning of the disaster. Taring Padi will also hold art workshops to inspire and share skills with the affected communities.

In order to raise funds for these activities, we are holding a 4 day Fundraising Festival including painting exhibition by many local Jogja artists, an art market, music concert and performance art. However we also must ask for your support in order to raise the necessary funds. We really hope that we can make this event happen through the support of friends and comrades and that together we can make it a success.
