Mizzima and the Most Memorable Events of Myanmar

by Kyalyi March 03, 2015
In this blogpost, we highlight some news videos from our content partners Mizzima, an independent news organisation from Myanmar. These videos help us understand what Myanmar is today.

Established in August 1998 by a group of Burmese journalists in exile, Mizzima is generally regarded as one of the leading daily newspapers in Myanmar. Alongside the daily, it also produces a weekly business magazine and television programs aired by Myanmar Radio & Television (MRTV).

It has remained an important part of the movement for democracy in Myanmar and has consistently captured the most memorable events in the country's history. Here are some notable videos from our growing collection of content from Mizzima.

7th July Memorial in Yangon University

Once again, memories of the 7th July incident came around, reminding us of the time when the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces) gunned down hundreds of peaceful students demonstrating at Rangoon University on the 7th of July, 1962.

In 2014, the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABSFU) organised a march of around 100 people through the Yangon University campus to commemorate the tragedy. The group carried flags, banners, and laid wreaths of flowers, remembering those who had lost their lives 52 years ago.

Riots start in Myanmar’s Mandalay City

The start of anti-Muslim riots in Madalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, left two people dead, about a dozen others wounded, and motor vehicles and shops ablaze, according to eyewitnesses. The riots, which took place over four days, were triggered by an unverified online story on the alleged rape of a Buddhist employee by her Muslim employers in a tea shop.

More rioting between Buddhist and Muslim groups erupted in July 2014, killing two people and injuring 14 others. The fatalities included a young Buddhist man who was riding a bike and a Muslim bicycle shop owner.

Obama meets Southeast Asian Youth in Myanmar

In 2012, during his visit to Myanmar, President Obama met and answered questions posed to him by Southeast Asian youth in Yangon.

Obama hosted a Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) town hall with 400 youth from the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This video shows the Q&A segment of the event, following the President's remarks.

Papuan Voices II Hits Jakarta

by Dhyta Caturani March 03, 2015
After the official launch in Yogyakarta, the eight videos from Papuan Voices II were brought to Jakarta’s public.

Papuan Voices II Hits Jakarta

On 12 January 2015, we screened Papuan Voices Vol. II at Kineforum in Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta. The event was scheduled for 6pm, but people started coming right from 4:30pm, fearing they wouldn't get a seat in the venue which was only meant for 45 people. And sure enough, we were running of seats pretty fast, and actually had to hold two screenings that night to accommodate the over 80 people who showed up!

Papuan Voices II Hits Jakarta

The first screening was followed by a discussion moderated by our Dhyta Caturani, with Dr. Hilmar Farid and Zely Ariane as resource persons. Dr. Hilmar pointed out that the film he liked most was Sekolah Papua (School of Papua), which he said portrayed the most basic problem in Papua. Discrimination with regards to access to education creates several problems and becomes a foundation for other forms of discrimination.

PV_JKT_3Zely spoke about how we, the people outside Papua, should start paying more attention to our brothers and sisters there by getting to know them better through more reliable information such as those presented in the films screened. "It’s time for us to stop ignoring Papua," she said. Enrico Aditjondro, who was also present at the screening, shared his experiences working on Papuan Voices I and during the early stages of Papuan Voices II.

The audience expressed a lot of appreciation for the films, saying that people outside Papua need to understand what is really going on there, from sources other than the mainstream media, adding that Papuan Voices II does just that.

In the month ahead, we'll be organising more screenings at universities in some other cities. If you would like to organize your own screenings of Papuan Voices II for your communities, institutions, or organizations, feel free to contact us so that we can send you a DVD toolkit of the films and offer other forms of support.

The Papuan Voices II video collection is available for viewing and downloading at papuanvoices.net.
