Description:
Surveillance, censorship, security threats to circumvention and open source technologies – these are some of the diverse challenges and needs that digital rights advocates around the world face. The impact of these challenges is typically heavier on activists from the Global South and marginalised communities, but their voices and perspectives are underrepresented in the digital rights field.
From activists to technologists to researchers, the diversity of profiles in the digital rights community plays a role in shaping and advancing digital rights at large. Fostering an inclusive community of digital rights defenders is critical to achieving internet freedoms for all. In this DRAPAC Series conversation, Team CommUNITY shares insights on their work on community building and engagement and their approach towards creating spaces for communities most affected by digital rights challenges.
Guest speaker:
Mardiya is a community manager at Team CommUNITY. She is a feminist digital sociologist whose work wrangles with investigating the fluid power dynamics in techno-societies, while experimenting with design justice approaches towards building public interest technologies and spaces.
